How it works is a social platform where students, instructors, and student interest groups can work together to reduce cost of textbooks and education in general.

So here’s how it works:

In three easy steps you can save tons of money on your textbooks:

Step 1 - Get registered with with a simple registration process, or use your social network account (Facebook, twitter, Google)

Step 2 - Add textbooks that you are studying in the current term or studied in previous terms and still own in your Bookshelf, and add textbooks that you want for next term in your wish list.

Step 3 - Start trading books with your friends, students on campus, or nationwide. Each book you give to another student will credit your account with the full value of the book. You can use this credit to request books in your wish list from other students.

Also, if you don’t want to trade your textbooks for credits, you can still sell your books to students directly from the BookGator Marketplace.

Why Trading?

Today, students have many choices to buy textbooks, however, none of them are economical:

  • New textbooks cost an avg. of $175 (after discount)
  • Used textbooks cost an avg. of $145
  • e-Textbooks cost an avg. of $125 (with no buyback)
  • Rent textbooks cost an avg. of $80 (with no buyback)

The average buyback value of textbooks by online and college bookstores are around 50% of the used textbook’s market price.

So above chart shows that combination of Trading with other options can save you tons of money.

Your social bookstore!

Save money. Save time. Save trees.

We believe that every term textbook shopping should cost < $99 and not take > 9 minutes

    • Hi, jakeyyedid, Glad you like the video! Unfortunately are we uablne to purchase every book. We buy a wide variety of books textbooks, trade, fiction, non-fiction, paperbacks, hardcovers, etc. but most have been published within the last 5 years. However, our buy list is constantly changing. So even if we are not currently buying a book you may want to check back in a few weeks to see if it has made its way onto our buy list. Thanks again for the kind words about the app.

      • Well I think knowledge is a right of every poresn and the knowledge should be open source in terms of books as well as in terms of other resources like softwares etc.

      • You’re kidding, right?College teobotxks already ARE Cliff’s Notes. I mean, I know that they are sometimes long and detailed, but they are secondary sources. You read a history textbook because, the author has already read and digested all the primary sources for you.I understand the demands of doing all the work required for success in college. Believe me, I attended various colleges for 12 years (NO, not just to get a B.A.) and then taught college for a number of years as well.If you can not find the time to do your work, you really need to either scale back on some of your other activities or go to college when you do have the time and energy to devote to it.Best wishes!

    • I think this is a wonderful idea! Borders is a great conpmay, and I am thrilled to see them expanding into new territory. I hope they will be around for a long time to come, and now I am even more convinced to continue using Chegg what an outstanding partnership!

  8. When I was teaching mdidle school in the late 1980s and early 1990s I knew our history and literature texts were horrid, but I couldn’t really put my finger on exactly why.Reading The Mad, Mad World of Textbook Adoption was a revelation. On virtually every page I would find myself almost leaping out of my seat, thinking YES!! That’s exactly what is wrong!!! Our textbooks are boring, banal, devoid of voice or life. Our history texts are scrubbed of any value judgements or controversy. Everything is just, well. . .nice. All cultures are nice, aren’t they? It’s like living in Pleasantville.Let’s trash the entire procurement system.

    • To get knowledge is the right of every psreon. Some students can afford text books, but most of the students don’t have the sources to get text books. All the sources should be open to gain the knowledge.

    • Hello, from a fellow stundet ambassador! Buying text books have always been a pain in the pocket for all stundets. I, like many, tend to buy text books from the book store, instead of buying them from online, for fear of the books not being in good condition. I think an upside to buying from the bookstore, is that you save some money from buying used material. I, for one, am enjoying that portion of it.

  9. The textbook aodption process is nothing if not complex and arduous. The whole textbook-industrial complex, complete with various lobbying groups and special interests, is ripe for reform. I agree that an open textbook initiative faces an uphill battle. However, clearly open educational resources that can be modified for differentiation are one of the primary means we have to improve education, which MUST be done if we are to remain viable as a society. Perhaps, the two of these facts together will motivate lawmakers and citizens to reform the whole textbook aodption process. Some states like Indiana are already starting to do this.
